Potomac Vocal Institute has offered a program of à la carte vocal instruction and workshops, with a proven, successful track record since May, 2015.
In fall 2019, we will launch the Professional Development Program: a dual-track, tuition based program designed for singers by singers. We believe traditional opera training lacks consistent, direct contact with performing artists. At PVI we are working to effectively bridge the gap between academia and the stage. While nothing replaces the university and conservatory in initial preparation, at a certain point in a singer’s development they need what only active professionals can teach: what is actually required to take the stage.
The Professional Development Program’s small size ensures all students receive highly individualized guidance and instruction.
Aside from weekly voice lessons and coachings, our classes will include:
Effective use of language- not just diction, not just grammar, but truly using the language to tell the story. (German, Italian, French, English)
Regular instruction in acting technique
Monologue classes by Artist-in-Residence, Leah Crocetto
Priority access to PVI’s exclusive ongoing seminars
Gap Year is geared toward recent college graduates considering graduate school and post-graduate singers preparing for young artist programs. This track focuses on the practical technique of learning roles, studying music, and choosing appropriate audition repertoire.
Rep Year (repertoire) takes singers about to launch onto the professional scene and provides a year of significant role study, focusing on building a PRACTICAL repertoire portfolio for entry level singers:
Comprimario and leading roles appropriate to fach
Concert and oratorio repertoire
Regular mini-residencies by special guest artists focusing on role study and rehearsal
Cover skill and technique
Rep Year singers will study regularly with Potomac Vocal teachers and coaches on technique and preparation, supplemented with instruction by professional singers exploring effective performance and style.
Guest artists for our inaugural season include: Kathleen Kelly, Barry Banks and Stephanie Blythe.
The Professional Development Program culminates with the PVInvitational: a mass audition for opera companies, orchestras, conductors and other casting professionals. In the two years we have held the Invitational, 41+ contracts have been offered.
By design, both tracks will provide a living resume of audio and video recordings to be used for audition and competition purposes.
Singers for the Professional Development Program will be chosen by audition and invitation only.
