Paul Peers is an Australian-American stage director whose work spans theatre, musical-theatre and opera. He is currently the Artistic Administrator of Urban Arias, an opera company that produces new opera in the Washington DC area. His opera directing debut was with Grammy nominated Boston Baroque, directing Händel’s Xerxes and Amadigi de Gaula. Paul built a career directing for regional opera companies in the United States directing for renown companies such as Opera Utah, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Pocket Opera New York and Opera Lafayette to name a few. His interest in new opera lead him to be a resident artist at the HERE Arts Center with the late Matt Marks where they created a new opera titled Mata Hari, which premiered in the Prototype Festival in 2017. In 2018 he directed the west-coast premiere of Mata Hari for West Edge Opera in Berkeley, California. Paul’s international directing credits are: Australia; David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, King Lear, Peter Weiss’ Marat/Sade, and Little Shop of Horrors. Canada; Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlo and Amon Miyamoto’s production of Tan Dun's Tea: A Mirror of Soul for Vancouver Opera. Germany; Geöffnet for the Dosto Projekt. His up-coming engagements are Mozart’s Magic Flute for Utah Opera and the US premier of Jonathan Dove’s The Monster in the Maze for Baltimore Choral Arts Society.
